A new, more robust blend of coffee added zip to McDonald's Corp.first-quarter sales, but profits fell 14 percent from a year earlier,when a tax gain jolted earnings.
The Oak Brook fast feeder earned $625.3 million, or 49 cents ashare, on 6 percent higher sales of $5.1 billion.
Comparable sales rose 6.6 percent with the introduction of round-the-clock operation at more than a third of restaurants and coffeemade from 100-percent Arabica beans. Revenue was also helped bydemand for Dollar Menu items including double cheeseburgers andfrench fries. A tax benefit of 13 cents a share increased profit ayear earlier.
