Fed: Restrictions on ACT taxi plates should be lifted
The ACT's competition regulator says restrictions on the number of taxi plates in theterritory should be lifted and thrown open to market forces.
The Independent Competition and Regulatory Commission has made the recommendation inits draft report into the future of the territory's taxi and hire car industry.
It also says the regulation of taxi fares should also be removed after a transitional period.
Senior commissioner PAUL BAXTER says the commission has also recommended taxi faresrise in accordance with the cost of living, to the tune of about 2.9 per cent from July1.
The future of the national capital's taxi industry has been under scrutiny, with manycustomers complaining at certain times it's impossible to hail a cab without lengthy delays.
But drivers say the cycle of parliamentary sitting weeks means an open market wouldleave many taxis empty in quiet non-sitting weeks and send drivers to the wall.
